The cosmetic demon

Beauty. That one word which creates havoc in so many lives. It all starts off pretty young, doesn't it? We have our dear little snow white who makes fairness creams go flying off the racks, the dainty Cinderella who could charm her prince with just plain beauty (oh, sorry, how can beauty ever be plain? i meant enchanting beauty) and of course, who can forget the ultimate... Barbie doll! Every young girl desperately wants to be like her when she grows up. But horror of horrors, the little girl who was systematically made to believe that beauty was her only virtue grew up, only to find herself normal, and went on to become an insecure, highly self-critical young woman with a self-confidence level which drops below zero.

Is this what our society wants to create? A set of young women who serve as a brilliant market to sell off all their products? This is just pure commercial bestiality which is ruining lives. I know a case where a husband left his wife, for a gorgeous arm-candy only because she was unable to shed off the post-pregnancy kilos she had piled on! So much for love and commitment! Forget death, it was just excess flab that did them apart!
I think we should come up with more realistic characters like Merinda from Brave, than fairy-tale fantasy women like Ariel. The focus should be on creating strong-minded women who know that their real beauty lies in the way they look at themselves (however, cliched that may sound, thanks to the dozens of self-help books and preachers of philosophy out there).

Media is an all-pervasive medium which should take the initiative in shaping up the personalities of the women of tomorrow. And for all you business entrepreneurs out there, if your product is as good as you claim it is, there will always be a market for it. There is no need for over-aggressive marketing techniques which crumble the very essence of a person.
